Rand Water’s Approach Towards a Sustainable Future as the Leader in the Water Sector
We’ve transformed from being an outdoor species to spending most of our daily life indoors. This report sheds light on the challenges humanity faces in supplying and maintaining basic services to sustain our indoor spaces. Rand Water is dedicated to supporting both industries and communities in becoming conscientious water consumers. This commitment is exemplified, in part, by its Water Wise brand. Beyond educating on various facets of water conservation, the brand delves into pioneering methods and techniques for promoting responsible water usage. This talk explores the imperative to transform water usage practices, emphasising the critical need for conservation strategies in the context of South Africa’s current water situation. The nation faces significant water challenges, necessitating a shift in approach and a collaborative effort with the Build Industry. Furthermore, it highlights the urgency of reshaping attitudes toward water use and the potential impact of collaborative initiatives in mitigating water scarcity. The presentation will focus on Rand Water WDM initiatives to assist municipalities in its area of service to reduce excessive consumption, and collectively reduce the unsustainable abstraction from the IVRS and comply with the 1600 million cubic meters/annum abstraction limit set by the Department of Water and Sanitation. The presentation will also cover a scenario of a municipality that is reducing the demand through aggressive demand reduction strategies. Rand Water as a responsible corporate citizen has high regard for the Green Building Council’s mission. With this in mind, Rand Water intends to implement Green Building principles in various works and operations. Many of our work activities and requirements for materials and suppliers are outsourced, therefore Green Procurement becomes very critical. It is for this reason that we want to share our Supply Chain Management principles with the broader Green Building community to explore possible strategic partnerships.

Asset- and Community-based Model: Communities Shaping Their Spaces Through Collaborative Action in the City – Storytelling
In the vibrant tapestry of urban life, communities are the driving force behind the evolution of the spaces they call home, be it through formal or informal means. However, their pivotal role has often been marginalised, politicised, or unjustly stigmatised. The Asset-Based Community-Based Model (ABCD) seeks to rectify this by recognising communities as valuable resources and essential stakeholders in shaping their urban environments. This innovative model embraces a co-creative, asset-based approach, unveiling locally rooted methodologies that leverage perhaps less obvious community assets to transform spaces. Currently being implemented in Gauteng, specifically in the City of Johannesburg, ABCD complements municipal planning processes like Integrated Development Planning (IDP) and is poised to strengthen the implementation of the District Development Model (DDM). Join this session to witness the powerful impact of communities, their unique perspectives, and their indispensable role in collaboratively shaping the urban spaces they inhabit.

Going Green in the Context of Inequality: New Materials, Reduced Energy and Water Use Report On An Ongoing Study of the EDGE Building Standard
One of the assumed benefits of smarter materials used in construction is reduced resource consumption over the lifetime of these developments. In particular, it is often assumed that residents need to consume less energy and water due to smarter, greener construction. These savings, when aggregated over the lifespan of development and multiplied over many such developments, would arguably deliver meaningful long-run environmental benefits. In addition, there is also the question of benefits to the residents of these developments. Our study takes place in South Africa, characterised by a large degree of inequality and a small middle class; characteristics shared by other regions where the global population, and demand for residential construction, are expected to grow most aggressively. The South African context imposes constraints upon residents that impact their energy and water consumption. In this context, smarter, greener construction holds the promise of delivering additional welfare to residents in the short run by lowering the amount of energy and water consumption required to achieve comfort. For lower middle-income residents such savings can be meaningful. We present the pilot phase of an ongoing study of the EDGE building standard, in South Africa, that seeks to lay the groundwork for assessing the degree to which these short-run welfare benefits and long-run environmental benefits are realised.

Spatial Design in the Reality of Informality: Thembalethu Township, George Municipality
Traditional townships in South Africa bear the weight of an apartheid legacy, confronting a complex set of challenges including a struggling economy, limited walkability, substandard living conditions, a scarcity of community amenities, and inadequate basic services and infrastructure. In response to these daunting realities, communities have adapted through informality, which manifests in various ways – from informal economic activities to informal built structures, materials, and movement patterns. Effectively addressing these challenges necessitates a shift in our approach – from ambitious visions of “what should ideally be” to practical strategies within the context of “what is realistic and appropriate.” This session invites us to explore how we can formalise around informality, rather than attempting to formalise it, recognising that informality is an inherent and often defining characteristic of South African townships. It calls for creative solutions like creating pedestrian-friendly sidewalks while acknowledging encroachments and irregular property boundaries, supporting informal livelihoods, and facilitating convenient pedestrian routes that cross property lines. By embracing the reality of informality and integrating it into urban design, we can enhance the quality of life and sustain livelihoods within these communities, preserving their unique identities in the process.
